Not So Grimm Tales

Michael Harvey

In June 2011, celebrated Storyteller and author Michael Harvey led a series of workshops with three Primary Schools in Rhondda Cynon Taff and Merthyr Tydfil.

Over two hundred pupils from Darrenlas Primary, Abercynon Infants and St Aloysius Primary Schools created poetry and stories exploring themes from Grimms Fairy Tales.

The workshops were arranged in partnership with the Rhondda Cynon Taff Venue Audience Development Manager to link with the show Not So Grimm Tales being performed at the Coliseum, Aberdare. The workshops explored some of the lesser well known tales collected by theBrothers Grimm including the Ash Boy.

Poem created by Darrenlas Primary School inspired by The Ash Boy:

My muddy skin is like the mud from the middle of the mountain
I have swirly hand patterns like inside an old oak tree
Your wet blood will stain my blade.

My blood sings like the lips of the princess
I have a beat like the crow’s wings
The flow of the stream
The running of the fox
Your blade will not hurt me..
