Tales of Driftwood

In June 2013 Foundation phase children (YEAR 2) from local schools in the Vale of Glamorgan enjoyed the opportunity of working with storytellers, and performance artists to create their own stories and performances in response to their environment with special focus on local woodlands.

The project was a partnership between Porthkerry Park’s Education Officer, the Forest Education Initiative, Vale of Glamorgan Foundation Phase advisor and Literature Wales.

Theatr Iolo initially created a fantasy world based around myths and legends associated with woodlands of Porthkerry Country Park. Ten year 2 classes from local schools visited the park for a half day session each and interacted with actors around the woods and beach, the children’s imaginations being engaged by winged serpents, a woman in black in the woods, the driftwood shack.

The schools then expanded on this experience back in the classroom, through a variety of work, from written stories and poems, art work, and new IT technologies. The schools also each enjoyed a visit from Ric Hool in July 2013 to create poetry inspired by the visit.

In September 2013, each class (now Year 3) enjoyed a further visit from either: Ric Hool, Phil Carradice or Francesca Kay to support the development of their creative writing skills in either story or poetic form.

The pupils work from Phase one of the project in June 2013, was exhibited in the Education Centre at Porthkerry Park. It is also planned to create a resource pack for future visitors to utilise for poetic inspiration.
