Petra the Penguin

Together with Communities 1st, The Parent Network and Caerphilly Arts Development Team, South Wales Literature put together a fantastic creative writing project last year, working with groups of parents from Hengoed Parent Forum

The aim was to create a fun and imaginative story that mothers could read with their children. After three workshops with writer and poet Mike Church, the groups wrote two magical stories: Petra the Penguin and Gorilla and the Mouse. They were then edited and compiled by Mike before being brought to life by illustrator Rachel Best – an artist based in Newport who works with CBeebies, CBBC and Studio 35, amongst others.

There are plans to publish both books this year with Petra the Penguin making an appearance in printed form next month.

The next phase of the project is to encourage and empower parents to read the books with their children, as well as to go out into the community and share their wonderful work with other families. In this way, mums and dads can pass down a love of reading to the next generation, and discover reading as a fun, rewarding way of spending time with their children.
