Penarth Heights

As new members of the South Wales Development Initiative, pupils in the Vale of Glamorgan enjoyed two days of workshops inspired by the demolition of the ‘Billy Banks’ and the development of the new Penarth Heights development.

In May 2012, pupils from Evenlode and Albert Road Primary Schools visited the sites in Penarth with author Phil Carradice and compiled a word bank of sights, sounds, smells and feelings inspired by the trip. These were then utilised to create the range of poems below:
Billy Banks
Hollie Corbett
Look through the fence
What do you see?
Graffiti
Sprayed across
The crumbling wall
Empty?
Or is it just me?

Look through the fence
What do you see?
Danger signs
Glaring at me
Dirty, messy
Rubble on the ground.
Sharp glass
shattered below…
like ice

Look through the fence
What do you see?
Scaffolding
Twining
Around buildings
Like clinging ivy.

I look through the fence
This is what I see…

Penarth Heights
Hollie Corbett
Look through the fence
What do you see?
Shimmering
White buildings
Shining under the yellow sun

Look through the fence
What do you see?
Rainbow
Coloured flowers
Emerging from the earth
Like starts, crawling through the night.

Look through the fence
What do you see?
Gleaming white ice
Like a spotlight under the ghostly pale moon.

I look though the fence
And this is what I see.

Billy Banks
Ollie Stock
Look through the fence
What do you see?
A tower of darkness
Gleaming in the distance
Like a portal
To the past
Leading to the dead.

Look through the fence
What do you see?
A haunting battle field
Shattering
Over me
As the windows smash
And the bricks
Crumble
Below the river

Look through the fence
What do you see?
The old city
of Atlantis
lying under the river
waves curl gently
as churches rot
and graffiti fades

Look through the fence
What do you see?
Billy Banks
Left behind as a memory
An old gorge
Forming
But as always left
Like a rotting
Abandoned dumpster

I look through the fence
This is what I see.

Billy Banks
Daniel M
Look through the fence
What do you see?
An abandoned block
Of ghostly flats
Covered in graffiti

Look through the fence
What do you see?
A great, big building
In an awful state
Looks as if a bomb
Has hit is
With smashed windows
Staring back at me

Look through the fence
What do you see?
A massive ghost town
Wrecked beyond
Your imagination
Like a nightmare
From beauty
to beast.

I look through the fence
This is what I see.

Billy Banks
Molly Chambers
Look though the fence
What do you see?
The haunted, abandoned flats
With smashed glass
Sticking out from the sides of the windows
Like sharp knives.

Look through the fence
What do you see?
The blue bells
Pushing up from the earth
With clear rain drops
Dripping slowly to the wet ground.

Look through the fence
What do you see?
The squishy brown mud
Climbing up my shoes

I looked through the fence
This is what I could see.

Billy Banks
Matthew Barber
Look through the fence
What do you see?
An old building
With ivy growing
Up the sides
Dirty old rags
Jumping out at me
The roof caving in
And graffiti shining
Like a river

Look through the fence
What do you see?
A war zone
Shattered with
Window pane glass
And laden
With rubble

Look through the fence
What do you see?
A home for a squatter
With a bed
And shelter
The rusted old stairwell
Rotting away
To nothing

Look through the fence
What do you see?
Once the best flats
In the world
Now doomed
To the ground
Overlooking the sea
The buildings of Cardiff
And the allotments
Of the houses below
This is what I see.

Billy Banks
Sophie Brewster
Look through the fence
What do you see?
A pitch of darkness
Blitzed
In rubbish and junk

Look through the fence
What do you see?
Shattered windows
Like black holes
Sucking up
The trouble to come.

Look through the fence
What do you see?
Mysterious shadows
Darting to and fro
Causing havoc
Throughout the buildings.

Look through the fence
What do you see?
Cigarette butts
Littered everywhere
Vodka bottles
Crushed larger cans.

Look through the fence
What do you see?
Rotting floorboards
And ceilings
About to collapse.

Look through the fence
What do you see?
A wall of graffiti
Like it’s a sheet
Of paper.

This is what I see.

Gleaming
Where the Billy Banks

Look through the fence
What do you see?
The view going
For miles
From a glistening window
Of the modern houses
Standing confidently
Over looking the view
Of the Bay
Like a 3D map.

Look through the fence
What do you see?
A blue metal fence
In caging
The beauty of the building
For the old houses
To look at
To think about
What they used to be.

Look through the fence
What do you see?
Someone handing over £5000
To the Estate Agent
As happy as can be
Hoping to start a life
Where the children could be
A new married couple
In love.

This is what I see.
