Get Creative Weekend – Book Creu Launches

Literature Wales teamed up with Vale of Glamorgan Libraries on the BBC’s Get Creative Weekend to launch Book Creu at Llantwit Major Library. This is a new kind of book club that’s about getting stuck in and creating as well as reading. The theme of the first club meeting was graphic novels. Illustrator Osian Grifford (www.osiangrifford.com) and performance poet and writer Mike Church led the session, helping the club create their own ‘zines – eight page miniature graphic novels that can be made from one sheet of A3 paper.

All kinds of wonderful stories filled the ‘zines such as a Humpty Dumpty who kicked everyone off his wall, a shepherd who might be roasted by his own sheep, and a book that captures stories, keeping them trapped inside.

Bettws Illustrates

As part of Newport Council’s Bettws Reads project, Literature Wales hosted Bettws Illustrates, a make your own graphic novel workshop open to the public in Bettws Library.

Performance poet and writer Mike Church and illustrator Osian Grifford (www.osiangrifford.com) helped young families create their own illustrated zine. Using computer games and day-to-day life in Bettws as inspiration they first storyboarded ideas before creating the zine itself on one sheet of A3 paper. With a few clever folds it became Poo City Rollers, the story of one pram’s journey around dog mess littered pavements, dodging bird poo from above.
